Airton Victorious on Home Soil
The 2018 GKA Kite-Surf World Tour got off to a cracking start in Cape Verde. Textbook conditions set the stage for a hugely successfully event, won by local hero and team rider Airton Cozzolino.
Read as he shares his stoke and we look forward to watching the action unfold in round two in Dakhla, Morocco, next month.
Hi Airton, did the event go as planned for you?
Yes! When I heard that Ponta Preta, event had been confirmed I started to train a lot, which was well worth it in the end. There was quite a lot of pressure to win. It’s my home spot and all my friends and family were there to support. I wanted to be the first! I’m stoked on my performance and to take 1st place in my backyard means everything. It’s a dream come true.
What gear did you ride and why?
I rode my Neo 9 and 10 m because the wind was offshore and quite light. The conditions were smaller than I’d hoped for but the waves were clean and perfect, so I took my ProWam 5’8” which is a top performer in any type of condition.
Who was your biggest rival?
My biggest rival was Mitu Monteiro. I had my eye on him but in the end he didn’t make it through. Then I saw Keahi De Aboitiz ripping and I was sure that i’d meet him in the Finals.
Tell us about the local talent in the competition.
The locals riders were so motivated and stoked to compete in a World Tour for the first time. There’s plenty of new talent and future world champions on the island so keep your eyes peeled.
What will you be doing to prepare for the next stop on tour?
I’ll be training like an animal!
