Welcome to the team Claudia!

Claudia Leon Martinez is the latest name to join the North Kiteboarding International team. Full of drive and motivation, we can’t wait to see what 2018 brings for this talented young Spanish rider.

Welcome to the team Claudia, how does it feel?

It’s a dream come true! I’ve always looked up to top female freestyle riders like Francesca Bagnoli and Paula Novotna, so it’s a huge step towards living The Dream.

How and when did you start kiteboarding?

Just before I turned 10 years old my father came home one day and told me he was going to do a kite lesson. Even though I didn’t know what kitesurfing was, I said I wanted to do it too. When I touched the bar for the first time, I fell in love with this sport.

When did you realise that you wanted to pursue it competitively?

I decided to compete a year an a half after I started kiting. As the Spanish Championship couldn’t be celebrated that year, I decided to compete in the Junior World Championship. To my surprise, I ended in second place; that’s when I realised that I wanted to keep competing and kiting as long as I could.

What products from the North Kiteboarding line do you love to ride and why?

My Vegas kites, Team Series 134cm board and wakestyle bar are indispensable for me. They are the best option for freestyle: powerful and docile as a whole.

Which riders inspire you and why?

Francesca Bagnoli is a very natural, funny, talented person. I’ve been training with her in Brazil and she encourages me to try new tricks and to improve those that I already land.

Bruna Kajiya is also very important for me. She’s world champion, very humble and talks to everybody, showing her friendly smile.

Gisela Pulido was my first inspiration, when I saw her riding, I decided to train hard and to compete like her.

How’s your 2018 looking and what goals are you hoping to achieve?

I expect to compete in the WKL Qualifier League, and I hope to pass to the Elite League in 2019. I want to compete in the Spain Kiteboarding League too, and revalidate my title as Spanish Champion and Junior World Champion. But the most important thing for me is to have as much fun as I can, and to keep with my high school studies.
